IV. ADOLESCENT GROUP WORK

Adolescence is one of the most exciting and complicated stages of life. You are at a time in your life when you are faced with many challenges and opportunities and making sense of it all is often a hard process.

The group is a natural setting for adolescents. You are taught in groups, live in groups, and often play in groups. Group work for adolescents can be a highly effective course of action in dealing with relevant adolescent issues, as social interaction is a key aspect of the process.

Group work can deal with such issues as:

§  Self-Esteem
§  Assertiveness
§  Gender Issues
§  Sex and Sexuality
§  HIV/Aids
§  Communication Skills, etc.

Things to remember:

  • Group sizes range from six to ten group members. Commitment to the group is essential, so it is best to attend all of the scheduled appointments, which will most likely be once a week for a month or more.
  • If you are younger than 18 years of age, the consent of your caregivers/parents will be needed. However, your confidentiality will still be a priority in group work and any information divulged in the group can not be disclosed without your consent*.
  • Topics are dealt with honestly and respectfully. Interaction between group members is encouraged and my role is as a facilitator rather than a group leader.

* Limits to confidentiality will be discussed with you.
